Notes from "The Snare" - Why?

Exodus 20:14 - "You shall not commit adultery."

The word adultery is associated with the turning aside of Israel from the true God to the worship of idols. Outside of marriage, our own desires become of primary importance and are compared to the description in the Old Testament of the sin of idol worship. When sexual intercourse takes place apart from the commitment of marriage, an individual's own interests slip into first place in his or her heart. We become surrounded by the all-consuming worship of self.

The bible refers to adultery in the same manner that it refers to murder, stealing, and lying (Jeremiah 7:9-10, Hosea 4:1-2, Revelation 9:21). However, our society doesn't hold immorality to such a high standard. At the most, immorality is looked at as a forgivable weakness.

The bottom-line "Why?" depends on our relationship with the Lord. If we are going to walk with the Lord, immorality is a lifestyle that we must give up.
